The brutality of Jamaican slavery has also been explored by Trevor Burnard in his Master, Tranny, and Desire, Thomas Thistlewood and His Slaves in the Anglo-Jamaican World (2004). Burnard describes one particular incident of the brutality and gruesome nature of slavery in Jamaica when he states that “A favorite punishment [of Thistlewood’s]…was what he called ‘Derby’s dose’, in which the slave was flogged, ‘salt pickle, lime juice & bird pepper’ were rubbed into the open wounds, and then another slave defecated in his mouth. He was immediately put in a gag whilst his mouth was full and made to wear the gag for four to five hours” (Burnard 2004: 104).

The importation of enslaved Africans to Jamaica would come to an end on January 1, 1808, when the British Parliament enforced the provisions of the Abolition of the Slave Trade Act of 1807, which abolished the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. The abolitionist movement in Jamaica was spearheaded by the Quakers who were organizing the anti-slavery attitudes throughout the New World. As Ryden observes,

Historians have turned to a number of social explanations for the rise of antislavery sentiments in late-eighteenth-century Britain. The most straightforward narrative credits the upsurge of religious revivalism during the eighteenth century. Quakers, who were the vanguard in organizing an Atlantic-wide antislavery movement, were manifestly motivated to oppose slavery because of their religious convictions. Beginning in mid-century America, both Anthony Benezet and John Woolman implored their fellow Friends to abandon slavery, for it was regarded as blasphemous for one individual to enjoy the absolute power to lord over another. The reach of this simple message was long, and their pamphlets influenced Quakers on both sides of the Atlantic as well as evangelical Anglicans. (Ryden 2010: 158)
